Cody was hunting around now. If he was going to become powerful, he was going to have to reassemble a perfect team. There weren't any promising Pokemon in these parts, but he could at least beef his Squirtle up quite a bit. And who knows? Maybe he might find a Pokemon promising enough to join his team. Though it was doubtful. Especially after reading the military posting about the Pokemon in these parts. So if Cody caught any Pokemon, they probably wouldn't be for battling. They'd be more for strategy.
A flying Pokemon would be nice to have. It'd be a great way to keep lookout as well as to search for other Pokemon or objects. A bird's eye view is very advantageous. But other than that, Cody doubted he would find any Pokemon he wants here. He would check for any bodies of water though. If he were to come across a Magikarp... Well then Cody wouldn't need very many other Pokemon at all.

Instead of a Flying-type, Cody came across a little Normal-type that happened to later evolve into a dual Water/Normal type. The little creature was brown, with tiny black eyes like shiny berries and big, sharp front teeth. It had no tail, but it had three nubs where a tail might have been.
It was, of course, a Bidoof.
Twitching its little red nose, it came close to Cody, inspecting the trainer bravely. Odd for such a weak Pokemon, to walk right up to a trainer like that, but this Bidoof was unique. It stood on its back legs and sniffed at Cody, then went back on all fours and scurried to his other side curiously.

Cody looked at the strange little mammal. It must either be very familiar with humans or not familiar with them at all. He scanned it with his Pokedex. It was quite a brave little Pokemon. It's not like Cody was very friendly-looking. Quite the contrary. No matter what the Pokedex told him though, he knew what was going to happen next.
Cody sent out his Squirtle, who appeared in a flash of red light. He then took a few steps away from the Bidoof, so he wasn't hit by any attacks. "Squirtle, show me how you battle. I want you to hit this Bidoof with a Tail Whip, and then two Zen Headbutts!" It was a little like overkill, but ah well. That was Cody's intention for his Pokemon anyway. And if a Pokemon could survive Cody's overkill tactics, then it was worth capturing, right?

The Bidoof leapt up into the air at seeing the trainer send out a Pokemon and order it to attack, then dodged all three attacks with a cry of "Well, I NEVER!"
..Apparently, this Bidoof could talk. Go figure.
"You know, I thought you looked like an interesting person to journey with, but never mind now! I'm not looking to fight." sniffed the Bidoof. It seemed less snooty when one was watching him flee, with his little tailnubs bobbing as he went as quickly as he could.

Cody shook his head as he watched the Bidoof hobble away. That was strange. However, you didn't come across a talking Pokemon everyday. Cody chased after the Bidoof. Once caught up, Cody swallowed his pride and pretended to apologize. If the Bidoof would willingly join his team, then it could be put to use somehow. "Hey, sorry about that. I figured you were looking for a battle. Generally when a wild Pokemon just approaches a trainer like that, it's a challenge. At least where I come from that is."
It seemed believable enough to Cody. And unless the creature ended up being psychic as well as articulate, then this might go well. All Cody could do was cross his fingers and wait. After returning Squirtle anyway.

The Bidoof snorted. "An apology? You're only apologizing because I'm special." He seemed to hit spot-on with that, but softened. "Well, you still seem interesting to me. I suppose I can join you anyway."
And lo and behold, Cody obtained a talking Bidoof~! Maybe he knew something about the local Pokemon..

Cody sent out the talking Bidoof. "So, how come you can talk?" It was blunt, but why sugar coat it? Obviously that's what Cody wanted to know. Wasn't much else to add on to that. Though Bidoof didn't seem like all that great a fighter, he hoped it would change. if his mother knew he wasted a Pokeball on a Bidoof... Oh, the thought almost scared him. But he kept calm, hoping this would turn out well.

As you where waiting for an answer another interesting thing happened. A Spearow landed about 15 feet beyond you and started looking around for food. It looked rather scrawny for its species maybe ya could add it to your group? Or just for training fodder. Male Level 7

Cody sent out his Squirtle to battle the Spearow as he scanned it with his Pokedex. "Squirtle, use a Tail Whip and two Zen Headbutts!" If the Spearow wasn't KO'd after all that, then it would make for a nice addition to the team. An aerial Pokemon would be awesome to have.
