Varheit walked briskly home, anticipating the picnic with a genuine happiness uncommon to his character. Arriving home he quickly gathered up a clean sheet and blanket, a basket to carry the food in to make the picnic more authentic, and a few of his personal effects. On his way to the parking garage it dawned on him. He was heading to a date with a member of the military. This was a terrible idea, this put all of his most carefully laid plans in jeopardy. He was possibly even walking into a trap. On the other hand she smelled nice and was beautiful in a subtle quiet way that set something in him ablaze. He knew he might regret this later, but he was going to see how this played out without letting his paranoia get to him.
"Looks like a nice evening out." he said to himself as he unlocked the door to his car and climbed in, sliding the key into the ignition."Should make for a nice atmosphere." And with that he pulled out of the garage and headed for the pokemon center.
A short time later Var arrived, pulling up on the curb and parking his black sedan, then climbing out and heading inside to find Rei and Cricket.

When he entered, Rei was sitting back in a chair, playing with her two filled Pokeballs. The bag was resting between her back and the back of the chair, her body posture slouched as she kept the weight off of her shoulders while the food was resting at her feet. When she saw him, she smiled widely, the sunglasses gone from sight. She stood up carefully, metal clinking in her bags. If he was going to be paranoid, her bag being full of unidentified metallic objects might be strange. But she seemed truly happy to see him as she approached, bringing the sushi.
"Still hot-cold and fresh," she told him with a smile. "Cricket should be ready to go as well. Are we taking the taxi again?"

"Naw, I didn't have my car with me when I went to the park cause I wanted the walk for my health." with a wink he gestured outside to the parked car waiting for them. "That's mine, I also brought a blanket and a basket to put the food in."
Taking a step forward Var lifted Cricket and the food and smiled beside himself."You know, the sunglasses are nice, but you have beautiful eyes, you should show them more often." he said offering his hand again as he headed for the car."going my way?"

"I have sensitive eyes," she explained as she took his hand again, blushing faintly from his compliment as she followed him. "I just decided to give up squinting though the day so I wear sunglasses most of the time until after the sun goes down. Even inside if there's any sunlight it's really annoying." With that, she waited for him to open the car politely before she helped herself into the passenger's seat. "And I'm not one for cars, but this is a nice one."
She closed the door and waited for him to get into the driver's seat, smiling at him as he got settled. "I don't have a car myself. It's a personal choice. Living in the heart of town, a bike gets me a long way, and I've been thinking of going abroad of late. I've never seen Altairen just to see it..."
Clipping Solo and Eevee's Pokeballs in place, she removed the backpack, strapping herself in for the short ride out of town. The large bag was then settled into her lap. "Have you?"

"Only from troop carriers and planes, never up close, to be honest I've been thinking the same thing." he said, shifting up as he hit a long stretch of road on the outskirts of town unfrequented by traffic."It's on my to do list." They came to a small clearing on a hill top as the road branched off to the right and he slid his car back into first, cresting the hill as he turned and coming to a clearing surrounded by dense foliage with a nice view of a cold moonlit valley beyond, away from the city lights and hustle and bustle of life in the largest metropolis in the region.
Pointing to a shadow in the moonlight ahead Var nodded to Rei as he pulled to a stop. "Would you believe that I lived there as a kid?" The lights from the sedan hit the front of a house that had obviously scene better years, a weather beaten two story building that looked like it had been burned and shot during the war years ago."Some good memories here, by the time I came back from Johto after receiving no word from my parents for over a year the enemy had already laid siege to the capital and been beaten back, but the damage to the surrounding farmlands had been done, but I don't hold it against anyone, war is hell, people get their heads bent out of shape and do things they'd never do if you met them on the street."
He reached down and bundled up the basket and his suitcase and stepped out of the car, throwing the blanket down in a nearby beam of moonlight."well, we're here, I hope you like the location." He smiled.

She grabbed a corner of the blanket to help him straighten it before settling down with the bag. She opened it finally, pulling out the two electric lamps and turning them on. It was an extra bit of light that wasn't completely necessary, but one never knew when clouds would take out their only source of light. She then produced a flashlight, waved it at him to let him know she had even more back up in the darkness, and finally settled down. Once that was done, she helped him begin opening the take out boxes and sorting who had what.
"It's really beautiful," she said finally, settling down next to him, crossing her legs as she got comfortable. "I have to say I had never thought of eating out, this is a very nice idea."
For a moment, she sat in silence, however, thinking. After a moment, she pulled off Eevee's Pokeball and set it down. If she was going to trust this guy with a Pokemon, she would have to trust him with herself first. And though a date was one thing, her past was carefully guraded.
"His name was Ebon. He was assigned to me after I joined the military and started to fight for them. Before that, I was a trainer, and a horrible one. I never won anything. It took me years to collect one set of badges. Then when I had them, I lost my first round in the League. So, I let those Pokemon free and gave up on training. But when I had Ebon and he evolved from an Eevee into an Umbreon, I felt as if I were finally doing something right.
"Then Vizath invaded Central and we were in the middle of it. Then, that was that. There was a bullet... and then he was gone. It should have been me, but he turned himself into a shield. He was gone in an instant, and there were too many injured people. No one cared about trying to revive a dead Pokemon.
But he was my Pokemon. He had been my friend, and he had never let me down. He made me feel as if I was capable and whole, which is something I hadn't felt since I was a child."
She popped a tuna roll into her mouth as she moved to pull the necklace off, the Umbreon's fangs dangling from the leather, pale in the light.
"This is the last thing I have from him. And, for some reason, when I was assigned another Pokemon, as well as a promotion of rank to commanding officer for their... inability to handle me in my state of mind... well. Solo was a handful to say the least, never listened to me. But when he saw Ebon's fangs, he calmed down and started listening. I don't know why, but even now, Ebon is helping me..."
She didn't notice the tears on her face, helping herself to some of her terriyaki, letting silence fall between them. She didn't know that her revelation of her rank meant that he would eventually have to overthrow her personally to take down the military. She didn't know that her story was horrifying and touching. All she knew was that even though it was in the past, and seemed unimportant to her, and she was just being overemotional.
"I don't know what to do with another Eevee. It just reminds me of Ebon."

Settling himself down next to Rei and helping himself to a bit of Unagi Varheit thought aloud."I think, the only thing you can do in a situation that makes good sense, is to try and honor your friends memory. He gave his own life to save yours. So the best thing you can do is live your life." He offered, wishing he could take her in his arms and wipe her tears away."When it comes down to it, it's what you'll do regardless, but knowing that he'd want you to be happy should probably count for something, I hope it does, And I hope things get better for you Rei."
He sat in silence for a moment, wondering what else to say as he popped a section of Dragon Roll into his mouth and chewed it slowly."I hope I don't sound too preachy, I just find myself moved by the whole situation." And with that he fell silent. waiting for a response from his companion in the moonlight.

As the pair dined and conversed, a pair of Pokemon wandered close. Attracted by the lights and the smell of food, they hastily moved closer, out of the bushes and into the moonlight. One was a rat with a curled tail, the other a mouse with a crooked one. The yellow mouse came closer to Rei than to Varheit, nose twitching at the smell of the delicious morsels she was munching at. He boldly padded as close as he dared, reaching a paw up cutely as if to beg for a piece.
The purple creature, on the other hand, stayed her distance, watching her companion's movements from afar and ready to rush in if he needed her help; she acted as a mother to the electric-type, and was fiercely protective.

Rei chuckled softly. Ebon would have loved a little Eevee companion. And she might have made a good mate for him in time. But now, it was painful to even look at her. Shaking her head, she moved to help herself to a Kanto (California) roll, when she saw the Pikachu coming closer to them. An eyebrow raised as she wondered what such a Pokemon was up to. Possibly the scent of food, or the presence of electricity had drawn him. It seemed to be the former as he reached a paw out towards them to beg for food. She slowly offered him the roll, knowing the avocado, cucumber, rice, seaweed, and fake Krabby meat would probably be more alurring to a rodent than the other more meat and fish heavy dishes they had brought with them.
Slowly, she looked around for any other Pokemon, but all she saw was a pair of eyes staring back at her from afar. Raising an eyebrow as she wondered what the other Pokemon was, she decided to look back at Var instead, grinning slightly.
"If we were to travel, Ebon would want me to collect a variety of Pokemon. And, it just so happens, I have a Shock Wave machine in my bags next to the extra Pokeballs. Would you object if I start a battle during our date?" a blush crossed her cheeks as she said the last words. Of course, if he said no, she would have to let the creature go, but it was all too perfect. Pikachu were drawn to the large city due to its electricity, bolder than those who lived to the northern areas near the railroad.

"Oh hey, a Pikachu, I didn't notice him earlier, sure go ahead and catch him, but let me give the little guy a bite to eat first." Var broke off a piece of his Dragon Roll and offered it to the tiny yellow mouse with a grin. "Here you go little one, you're welcome to a bite to eat, and your friend is too if it'll come over here." setting his plate down he moved a little closer to Rei to get a better vantage point to set the food before the electric pokemon. "These guys are pretty friendly even in the wild it seems, I've never seen a wild one up close like this, hold on here Rei, I'll go see if the one hiding in the bushes is hungry." He stood, lifting his plate from teh ground then slowly and cautiously approaching the bushes, careful not to startle whatever was hiding in them. "Here little one, I won't hurt you, I brought you some food."

The Pikachu, upon seeing an offering of food, took the Kanto Roll from Rei's hand and began to chew on it like a hamster gnawing a sunflower seed. It ate all of the good stuff from the middle of the roll first, then moved on to the rice and seaweed. This bit was particularly chewy, and he took his time eating it. Once he was done, he sighed softly and closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of being fed. He looked over at Rei, small tendrils of electricity buzzing from his red cheeks to the tip of his tail. Shyly, he reached out and touched Rei on the arm, causing much of her hair to stand straight up.
Varheit wasn't having as much luck. At the sound of his footsteps, the Ratatta tensed and began to growl; the instinct of fighting whatever-it-was off had hit her before the nearing smells of food had. As the gentleman lowered the plate toward her, however, the Ratatta relaxed just a smidgen and walked toward the food, nose twitching. Determining it was safe, she threw Varheit a dirty look and began to eat a stray Dragon Roll. She ate the rice around it first, gnawing on the seaweed a bit before throwing much of it away. She then worked on the rest of the roll, carefully setting aside the parts she didn't like.
This was going well, for a non-violent "battle". You might even be able to skip the whole battling process if they like you enough.

Rei was startled at Pikachu's non-violent behavior, having thought the creature wouldn't do such a thing. Considering how much the Altairen military had ravished the surrounding land over the years, she had thought the Pokemon would simply attack on sight. She laughed softly as she saw long strands of her hair begin to life off, the hair on her arms standing straight up as he let a light charge through her body. It was a strange thing, to be zapped by an Electric type, but not be hurt by it. Sort of like what some people say happens with a Ponyta. If they trust you, you won't be burned by their fire.
"Maybe Pokemon are a little more resilient than I ever gave them credit for," she spoke softly to Varheit. Slowly, she reached a hand out, trying to not startle the Pikachu. She was striving to touch the Pokemon in return, and offer it gently scratches under the chin and around the ears. Most animals liked that, and though she had never owned a Pikachu herself, she figured this one might like the feeling.
"I thought they might be more aggressive. Maybe it's just humans..."

"Hey there little one." Varheit beamed at the tiny Rattatta as it munched on the plate of sushi then reached over to offer it more of his food, carefully gauging it's reaction then reaching for a dish and pouring it some water from a flask in his suitcase."There you go, should help you wash down the rice." Slowly and carefully he reached his hand out in a non-threatening manner for the Rattatta to investigate in case he regained it's attention, hoping to pet it if it trusted him after a time.

Pikachu buzzed happily, raising a few more hairs. He leaned into the scratching, gently guiding your hand downward, toward a particularly itchy spot on his back. Once it was there, he sighed contentedly, releasing a shower of sparks that danced along the ground. After a bit, he moved way from your hand and came up even closer, putting his little paws on your knee. He eased himself onto your leg and reached up and nibbled your hair. He was tense, as if he was testing something.
Ratatta, meanwhile, was having a feast. She chose a few random bits of sushi on Varheit's plate, slurping up the eels of the Dragon Rolls and leaving the rest. She was too busy munching on the rice to really care about Varheit's hand reaching toward her, although she reached up and licked the leftover sauce on his fingers. She froze, mid-lick, as if she was realizing what she was doing. Upon looking over at Pikachu, however, she relaxed a little and nuzzled Varheit's fingers.

"Does my conditioner taste good?" Rei raised one of her hands to stroke Pikachu's back, seeming to not care that her hair was being chewed on. She leaned back slightly, using her other hand as a prop as she rested her weight on her arm. "You're a light-weight, aren't you? Hm... I wonder if I could persuade you to join me without a fight. You don't really seem like you would pick a fight. Then again..."she paused, frowning slightly as she realized something. "None of my Pokemon would pick a fight. Not even Ebon would have."
Slowly, she let out a sigh and resumed her gentle stroking of his back. Then, she looked back at Varheit. "Hey, why do you think Pokemon fight? Do they like it? Or is it just instinct? Because I've yet to know a Pokemon personally who would start fighting just for the sake of it."
