Rei stepped out of the large apartment complex that housed various military personnel who had no housing of their own. Being a traveler by nature, she had never found the time to settle down and purchase a house of her own, and in the end she didn't regret it one bit. In her arms, a wild Growlithe puppy was thrashing around, paws flailing in the air as she carried him down the steps and into the street below.
"Solo, don't get run over," she hissed softly.
"Rowl!" he looked slightly offended as she set him down. Straightening, she tried to brush red and white hairs from her black shirt while keeping a hold on a leather-bound book. An official pen from the military was clipped to the loose spine, the only real indication of her connection with the military this day.
She wore tight black jeans that showed the slenderness of her toned legs, a tight belt wrapping around her waist and holding Solo's Pokeball. It felt almost nostalgic as she walked down the streets of Central with a Pokemon at her side. Solo's claws clicked on the concrete as they walked, his tail going a mile a minute as he weaved back and forth on the walkway.
Where they would end up, Rei wasn't certain. She just knew her Pokemon didn't deserve to stay cooped up inside during all hours. Sighing, she reached for her sunglasses folded into the neckline of her shirt and pulled them free. With a flick of the wrist, then snapped open, and were set on her nose, her movements suggesting years of habit.
"I hate shrinks," she complained to no one in particular, her boots kicking into the ground as she bowed her head slightly to glare at the journal she had been assigned to write. Supposedly it would be therapeutic to get her thoughts down, but she had only written a few lines so far.
Perhaps it would be a good day to visit the park.

Meanwhile in the park, a man in his early thirties passes the time feeding a flock of young pidgey that have blown in with the spring, among them a Natu darts curiously, searching his surroundings for objects of interest.
"Hmm, I wonder what she's up to, not often you see a growlithe allowed out of it's pokeball in the park." he says to himself as he fiddles idly with his cane. "Do you think we should introduce ourselves Cricket" he says, gazing down at his companion, the young Natu's reply of chirping and flapping it's wings rapidly signaling to the affirmative. "Alright then, let's go investigate." smiling he reaches down and takes the Natu in his hand setting it on his shoulder as he approaches her.

It was Solo who first noticed the stranger approaching them. He began to run to the man, barking happily while running around the stranger's feet. Then, just as quick as he had began, the rambunctious creature shot off towards nearby Pidgey, leaping around happily as though he wanted to fly away with them. Rei herself felt pity for the birds as she let out a soft sigh, reaching her hand up to touch the fangs hanging on the leather cord wrapped around her neck.
"Sorry about him. He's still just a puppy," Rei smiled faintly, reguarding the older man through her tinted sunglasses. "He wouldn't hurt a fly."
Even as she spoke, Solo began to run back towards them, tripping over his own large paws and rolling off down the hill. For a moment, Rei's mouth opened slightly as she watched her Pokemon though she couldn't think of a word to say.
"Hmph," she shook her head slightly as he finally reached the bottom of the shallow hill, looking around in confusion.

"Pleasant weather we're having isn't it." smiling as he removes the monocle and reaches up to scratch the Natu on his shoulder behind it's wing, illiciting a contented chirp
"What brings a member of the military to the park today?" he asked of her, taking her in with an appraising eye the way her drill instructor's might have back in training.

Rei's grin was quick to appear at his words. Raising the arm holding the journal, she waved it at him, ignoring Solo as he ran back up the hill and literally collapsed, panting, at the base of her feet. She shook the book slightly, allowing the pen to rattle against the leather lightly before she lowered her hand, her tone dry as she spoke.
"Research," she informed him. "Soul-searching or something. They've gotten soft since the fighting stopped," she looked down at Solo as she spoke these words, trailing off as if suddenly lost in thought. Images flickered through her mind, words, sounds, the shrill scream of bullets passing her head.
Suddenly, her body jerked ever so slightly as she snapped back to reality, continuing to speak, "I suppose it's for the best, but I don't write, so it's utterly pointless."
"Growl?" Solo rolled onto his back, his tail wagging as he stared up at his trainer with large, adoring eyes. Behind her glasses, Rei flicked her gaze back down to him, her jaw clenching. Despite her words, she felt momentarily sick at the thought of Solo going into a fight. He was still just a baby.
"No," she spoke to her Pokemon. "I didn't bring food for you."
"Rowl..." he whined softly and began to whimper pathetically at her.

Chuckling the older gentleman reached into his pocket and brought forth a handful of the food he was tossing to the pidgey "Oran Berries, if he'd like one." tossing them lightly in his hand with a smile. "Cute Growlithe, I've always had a fondness for fire types, the passion they show in combat is unmatched."
At that the Natu on his shoulder, sensing it was being ignored nudged him forcefully and let out a small chirp, insisting on being fed as well "Alright Cricket, I know, you want some more, but you'll need to work for the food this time, that Growlithe is likely to try and take it from you, now be on your best behavior and don't make an enemy of a potential friend" and with that he flung a pocketful of berries into the field.

Solo immediately sat bolt upright as he caught the scent of the berries, and sat up on his haunches, paws waving slightly in the air as he begged for the treat. Seeing the berries thrown off into the field, he shot off happily, tail wagging as he pounced onto a berry and helped himself to it. Rei's eyebrow rose as she watched him stuff his face before looking back to the man with a lopsided grin.
"Thanks. I don't mind this Growlithe. He doesn't give me too much trouble, for a puppy that is. I don't know what to do with him until he matures a bit more, however," she trailed off slightly once again, though her pause was only momentary before she continued. "My preferred Pokemon isn't any particular type. I've seen a Dark type make a flame look weak."
Her grin faded into a thin-lipped smile. "So, who are you, sir?" she began to appraise him in return, his briefcase causing her gaze to linger. "I'm not so used to being called out, no matter where I go."
'In fact,' she thought to herself, 'people tend to fear the military, it's not often -anyone- approaches me.'

"My name is Varheit, how do you do" he said with a grin and a sweeping bow. "I used to be in the military myself actually, but, I eventually left to pursue other interests, I see my briefcase has caught your interest." he stated noticing her gaze and then reaching down to undo the lock.
Setting himself about his task he cracked open his suitcase revealing it's contents. 5 pokeballs, various documents, the patch off of a lieutenant colonel's uniform, an old boot knife, and a picture depicting a man 10 years younger and looking less worn standing in line with the rest of his squad. "Mostly just a box of memories, but it serves it's purpose."
"I find that occasionally in my old age I tend to forget important things, and a while back some of my pokemon were stolen in the night, so I keep all my important possessions on me at all times now, better to risk losing them under my watch and have no one but myself to blame than to let someone else steal them and worsen my view on the human condition further. But be that as it may I get my question now since I have answered yours and more. What is your name miss?"

Her expression changed to sheer amusement as he bowed to her, inclining her head in return. Her Growlithe returned to her feet as he spoke, her expression hardly changing, though her smile softened as he spoke to her, then posed his own question.
"I am Rei, and I hardly find people much better than you do," she knelt down slightly to place her hand on her Pokemon's head. "This is Solo, my Growlithe. Say hello, Solo."
"Row-Row!" her Pokemon chimed on command, the growling sounding oddly human as he tried to form the word "hello". She giggled and picked him up, struggling slightly with his weight as she straightened.
"Getting fat, there," she commented lightly. "In any event, I understand what you mean about people. Me, I was thinking about starting to travel around this land, to see the lands, and what is left of the Pokemon," she frowned at her own words.
"You don't look that old."

"Well, they say when you're young at heart you never really grow old, that's where I pass that judgement on myself." Scratches his head nervously, his demeanor broken by the comment. "Well, that seems like an interesting time, you know, I think I might just do that myself one of these days, when I was younger I traveled to Johto to become a trainer. Those were good times, Just I my pokemon and the wind at my back. I wish you the best of luck no matter what happens Rei." he said with a smile.
His Natu took off from his shoulder, it's brief rest over as it sought out any berries her Growlithe might have missed before flying down to land on the ground beside it, dropping a few for him to munch on and cooing happily.
"Hmm, what do you say to a little test of skill between trainers Rei?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "I'd like to see how the next generation of military trainers operates in a battle."

"I used to be a trainer in Kanto myself, way back when," she shook her head slightly. "I was a horrible Pokemon trainer. I was just a kid without a talent and without a break. I came here to become better, but I haven't taken part in a Pokemon battle since joining the military."
Solo wagged his tail happily as Natu offered up a selection of berries, bowing his head to help himself to one of the berries. While chewing, his cold nose touched another berry, pushing it back to the Natu.
"Battle, however, is something that I've become accustomed to. Solo, heel," she commanded, her tone becoming sharp as she ordered his attention. Solo hurried back to her left side, sitting down obediently as he awaited further instruction. "I hope you won't go easy on me, Varheit."
"Growlithe?" Solo asked, looking confused.
"Solo, we're going to begin the battle with Roar. Then follow up with a barage of Bite attacks. Understand?"
"Growl!" he replied, jumping forward slightly as he waited for an opponent to take the field opposite of himself. Hackles raised, he bared his fangs, waiting for the battle to begin.

"I got my start in Johto, before I caught my Cricket here I saw a few fights with Natu in the ring, clever little things, always on their feet, let's see how they fair against one another shall we* he said with a smile tapping his stick on the ground and calling Cricket to attention. "now little friend, you know the tactic we discussed for close range combatants yes?" the Natu tipped forward, acknowledging his statement. "good, now, go forth and conquer!"
With that the usually cheerful bird puffed itself up, eyeing the growlithe with a crazed look in it's eyes.

vs Growlithe 100% Health 100% Energy Natu 100% Health 100% Energy Both pokemon rev up to battle! The small bird, Natu tilted its head back and a small purple/black ball was forming at it's beak. It blasted off in the direction of Growlithe, smacking the pup in the head. The brown canine bared its teeth and took off towards Natu, coming up and sinking its fangs deep within the bird. Causing it to squirm and another shadow ball was formed; hitting the Growlth in the face. With his roar of pain, he jumped back, shaking off the attack. The tiny bird huddled a bit, its eyes narrowed strictly at the pup, two beams seemed to just -leer- towards him. Each of the pokemon panted, seeming to be out of breath for a few moments. Growlithe 91% Health 80% Energy Natu 89% Health 80% Energy

then suddenly, after catching it's breath the tiny bird pokemon took off into the air above the growlithe like a shot, shadows swirling towards it's beak again as it prepared a volley to blast the pup.

"Solo, try to leap into the air to catch Natu. Bite down and drag it down and don't let it get away!" Rei commanded as soon as she saw Natu raise into the air. Her gaze drifted to the opposing trainer, noting that he seemed to have very little to do with his Pokemon's movements. She grinned slowly at him, raising a hand to press her sunglasses back up her nose. This wouldn't be an easy fight.
"Grrr..." Solo leapt into the air as commanded, trying to catch up to Natu, and Rei could only hope that he could do it.
